Triveni Acharya, a Mumbai-based journalist and activist, has emerged as a formidable force in the relentless fight against sex trafficking. Her unwavering commitment to this cause not only earns her national and international acclaim but positions her as a symbol of hope for the victims ensnared in the dark web of human trafficking.
Triveni Acharya's journey took a profound turn when she assumed the presidency of the Rescue Foundation, an anti-sex-trafficking group founded by her late husband, Balkrishna Acharya.
The Foundation's mission revolves around the rescue, rehabilitation, and repatriation of trafficking victims from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, liberating approximately 300 girls annually from the clutches of forced prostitution through daring brothel raids.
The nature of Acharya's work places her in the line of fire, with sex traffickers resorting to threats and violence. The Foundation's impactful operations disrupt the lucrative trade, making Acharya a target for those vested in maintaining this nefarious industry.
Undeterred by numerous death threats, Acharya continues her mission to bring justice to victims and dismantle the networks perpetuating human trafficking.
Triveni Acharya's outstanding contributions have earned her numerous accolades. The Rescue Foundation received the Stree Shakti Award for Women Entrepreneurs in 2008.
The following year, she was honoured with the Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award, presented by Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou, accompanied by a significant grant of US$100,000.
Further recognition came in 2011 with the Civil Courage Prize from The Train Foundation and the Humanitarian Honoree of the World of Children Award in 2013, securing a $75,000 grant.
Triveni Acharya's unwavering dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating victims of sex trafficking has transformed lives and set a powerful example for others. Her leadership of the Rescue Foundation, coupled with numerous accolades, emphasises the importance of collective action in addressing the pervasive issue of human trafficking.
In the ongoing global fight against sex trafficking, Triveni Acharya stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring change and making a significant impact.
